Innovation technopreneurs from 10 institutions of higher learning were honoured recently at the 6th annual MSC Malaysia-IHL Business Plan Competition awards presentation ceremony.The ceremony saw the Lextronics team from KDU College walk away with the grand prize in the Business Plan category for their invention of the “SMS Controlled Multi Socket” plan, which allows home owners to control household appliances when away from home. The team, comprising students Joshua Yam Meng Thai and Yeoh Huey Ling, won a cash prize of RM7,000.
Meanwhile, IIUM Inventors from International Islamic University Malaysia earned RM5,000 as the grand prize winner in the Business Idea category for their “Foot Mouse” idea, a computer mouse designed for people physically unable to manouevre a mouse with their hands.
The annual competition, which is organised by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), aims to create new, innovation-based ICT enterprises through the development of viable ideas. This year’s competition was also co-organised by the Higher Education Ministry.
MDeC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali said that the competition was part of MSC Malaysia’s blueprint to encourage technopreneurship.
“Since 2004, the competition has continued to develop the talents of the students involved, and encourage them as they attempt the path of technopreneurship,” he said.
He added that he was very encouraged by the increase in participation from students this year.
In the Business Plan category, Multimedia University’s team HBS2 and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)’s team Mobiworld won the second and third prize respectively.
Meanwhile, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP)’s team Medialab Studio and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)’s team Linking Park received the second and third prize respectively in the Business Idea category.
Winning teams in the Business Plan category will participate in the next MSC Malaysia Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance Awards.
Also present at the event were Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Fadillah Yusof, Malaysian Entrepreneurial Development Centre (MEDEC) director Assoc Prof Datin Norela Nuruddin, MDeC chief operating officer Ng Wan Peng, and KDU College business and research development manager Gerard Boey Kong Hoong.
